Wolfberry - Goji berry

Posted by Noble Savage on

Goji berry (Lycium barbarum) as a medicinal plant originates from ancient China. Also known as wolfberries, these red berries have a slightly sour, but sweet taste. They often come in dried form, like raisins, but some manufacturers package them in form of powders.

Rich in nutrients

Goji berries are one of those "fruits" that seem too packed with nutrients for it to be real. But it is. Among many vitamins and minerals goji berries include, vitamin C, fiber, iron, vitamin A, zinc, and antioxidants are the most abundant.

They also contain all eight essential amino acids, an ounce of serving providing almost 10 percent of daily values for protein.

High fiber and complex carb content mean that blood sugar will rise more slowly, reducing the risk of sugar crash afterward.

Immune system and flu protection

A boosted immune system and flu-protection often go hand-in-hand. The high vitamin content my be the reasons both are boosted.

Some early lab testing found that goji berries may provide protection against subsequent infections for older adults who've received flu vaccine.

Potential weight loss aid

High energy content in small servings, along with high fiber content can be an excellent small meal to nibble on and reduce cravings. The rich, sweet taste helps with that too. The taste doesn't come with a high-sugar content, which is another benefit of goji berries.

Antioxidants for skin and eyes

Zeaxanthin is a type of antioxidant that goji berries are rich in. It's not important just because it gives goji berries their rich color, but because it protects cells against breakdown when they're exposed to free radical damage. This damage can occur for hundreds of reasons, one of them being (cigarette) smoke, direct ingestion of free radicals or radiation.

Increased testosterone

Although there need to be additional studies to explore this property of goji berries, traditional use suggests this could be a rich potential area of interest.

A study on rats showed that goji berries significantly increase sperm quantity and mobility, shorten erection, capture and speculation response, improve sexual ability, and improve recovery on testosterone levels.
